Celebrating 32 Years of Ian Crowe at Lynas Foodservice
After 32 years of dedication, leadership and friendship, Lynas Foodservice has celebrated the retirement of Deputy Managing Director Ian Crowe.
When Ian joined Lynas in 1994 as an accountant, the business had a turnover of £9 million, 18 trucks, 60 colleagues and around 1,000 product lines.
Today, the Group is on course for £225 million in turnover, with more than 120 vehicles, 700 colleagues and 5,500 product lines.
Behind those numbers is a remarkable story and Ian has played a central role in helping to build the Lynas we know today.
A partnership that helped shape Lynas
At a special retirement lunch, Managing Director Andrew Lynas paid a heartfelt tribute to Ian, reflecting on his contribution and the close relationship he shared with Andrew’s late father, Norman Lynas.
Together, Norman and Ian formed a partnership built on trust, loyalty and a shared commitment to the family business. While Norman was known for his drive and ambition, Ian was the steady hand behind the scenes, quietly making things happen. Reflecting on their relationship, Andrew shared:
“What Lynas is today is built on that bond, and I had the privilege of a front-row seat for all of it.”
Over the years, Ian’s influence extended across almost every part of the business, from finance and purchasing to supply chain, property and the development of Lynas’ warehouses.
Known for his sharp commercial judgement and hands-on approach, Ian was as comfortable negotiating major investments as he was working alongside colleagues on the warehouse floor to get the job done.
More than a colleague — a lasting impact on people
Beyond the projects and milestones, it was Ian’s support and encouragement of those around him that left the greatest impression. From introducing the first PCs and company emails to developing Lynas Online, supporting business acquisitions and eventually serving on the Board together, Alastair Magee, Finance Director, reflected on almost 25 years working alongside Ian.
“Ian wanted everyone to succeed — that’s a rare quality to have. In the beginning you were my boss and mentor, by the end we were colleagues and somewhere along the way we became friends”
A celebration with a personal touch
Among the stories shared was Ian’s well-known love of broccoli which inspired Sandrine from our canteen to create a rather special batch of broccoli shortbread for the occasion!
With plenty of laughter, memories and heartfelt words, it was a fitting celebration of someone who has given so much to the business and the people within it.

As Lynas celebrates its 75th anniversary, Ian’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in the company’s story.
As Andrew concluded in his tribute:
“Thirty-two years. Few people in the seventy-five-year history of this company will leave a mark like yours. Thank you — from the bottom of my heart”
